The crystal has a long, tapered form with a sharply defined termination and strong horizontal growth along the exposed quartz faces. Where the surface remains clear the smoky quartz is highly lustrous, while the coated faces are heavily textured by the goethite, creating a dense matte surface over a large portion of the crystal.

Across these darker areas, the goethite develops into fine rounded botryoidal growth, with small overlapping globular forms creating an unusually intricate surface texture. Subtle iron mineralisation is also present through the coating, adding further variation without interrupting the predominantly dark appearance of the specimen.

The contrast between glossy exposed quartz and the densely textured goethite gives the piece a particularly dramatic appearance, with very different character depending on the viewing angle.
