Jacaré Quartz with Goethite, Brazil
Jacaré Quartz with Goethite, Brazil
Minerals: Smoky Quartz, Goethite
Locality: Minas Gerais, Brazil
Dimensions: 115mm x 89mm x 48mm
Weight: 441g
Provenance: ex. Mala Haslem Collection
Here's a substantial old stock smoky Jacaré quartz from Brazil, with an unusually strong contrast between the heavily structured crystal growth across the front and botryoidal goethite covering much of the reverse.
The front is dominated by chunky, intergrown quartz with deeply stepped Jacaré growth and broad reflective faces. The growth is dense and three dimensional, with overlapping crystal sections creating a strongly textured surface rather than a single simple prism. The smoky colour is warm brown through the clearer areas, with lighter internal zones visible beneath the more complex external growth.
The reverse is dramatically different, with rounded botryoidal goethite deposited across the matrix and lower quartz. One larger quartz section projects through this coating with tapered edges, creating a particularly sculptural profile and a strong contrast between the smooth, rounded goethite and the sharply structured quartz.
At 441g, the specimen has considerable presence in hand, and the difference between the two sides makes it especially interesting to view from multiple angles. The specimen certainly features distinct character, combining old Brazilian material with pronounced Jacaré growth and substantial botryoidal goethite.
