Schorl, Fluorite & Hyalite Opal, Erongo, Namibia
Schorl, Fluorite & Hyalite Opal, Erongo, Namibia
Minerals: Schorl, Fluorite & Hyalite Opal
Locality: Erongo Mountains, Erongo Region, Namibia
Dimensions: 53mm x 30mm x 35mm
Weight: 75.2g
Here's a rich combination specimen from the Erongo Mountains, bringing together a substantial black schorl crystal with complex fluorite and fluorescent hyalite opal.
The fluorite forms a large, highly modified crystal with remarkable internal colour. In normal light it presents predominantly purple, with a defined margin and numerous small schorl crystals crossing and penetrating the surface. Under stronger backlight, a vivid yellow green interior becomes visible beneath the darker outer zoning.
Beside it sits a large, deeply striated schorl crystal, with further aggregated tourmaline growth creating an exceptionally detailed reverse. Hyalite opal is concentrated through portions of this association and fluoresces bright green under UV, giving the specimen a different appearance under ultraviolet light. Muscovite is also visibly present around the fluorite and matrix.
There is a lot happening within only 53mm, and the relationship between the large schorl, zoned fluorite, fine tourmaline growth and fluorescent opal makes this a particularly complete example of the classic Erongo mineral association.
