Aquamarine with Schorl, Erongo, Namibia
Aquamarine with Schorl, Erongo, Namibia
Minerals: Aquamarine with Schorl
Locality: Erongo Mountains, Erongo Region, Namibia
Dimensions: 33mm x 28mm x 30mm
Weight: 9.2g
This sculptural aquamarine and schorl combination is from the Erongo Mountains in Namibia. The specimen is composed of a dense arrangement of pale blue green aquamarine crystals radiating outward in several directions.
The aquamarine is beautifully developed for such a compact specimen, with long prismatic crystals, strong longitudinal striations and numerous well formed hexagonal terminations. Rather than presenting as a simple parallel cluster, the crystals intersect and project at opposing angles, giving the specimen considerable depth and a strong architectural form.
Small black schorl crystals occur throughout the aquamarine, becoming especially concentrated around several of the lower terminations. Their dark colour provides a sharp contrast against the very pale aquamarine and makes the mineral association immediately apparent under close inspection. Small areas of warm iron staining add further detail without overwhelming the delicate colour.
At only 33mm across, this is a rather complex specimen. The radiating habit allows it to be viewed successfully from almost every direction, with entirely different arrangements of aquamarine possible through experimentation.
