Minerals:  Quartz
Locality: Peñas Blancas, San Pablo de Borbur, Western Boyacá Province, Boyacá Department, Colombia
Dimensions: 165mm x 48mm x 50mm (approx)
Weight: 466g
Provenance: ex. Mala Haslem Collection

This is an extraordinary Peñas Blancas quartz, and one of the finest crystals from this locality that we have ever handled. At 165mm tall, with exceptional clarity, wet lustre and remarkably complete growth, it is an unusually important example of Colombian quartz at this scale.

The crystal has a long, tapered habit with strongly striated prism faces and a sharply formed termination. Much of the upper section remains exceptionally clear, with highly reflective surfaces and the almost wet appearance associated with the best Peñas Blancas material. Internal veils and healed fractures become more visible toward the lower portion, while the upper body retains remarkable transparency for a crystal of this size.

The specimen is in near excellent condition overall, with only a minute contact at the termination visible on very close inspection. The faces remain beautifully preserved, with crisp growth features and strong definition throughout.

Peñas Blancas material is quite distinct from the Brazilian quartz commonly associated with the commercial “Lemurian” description. The Colombian crystals are particularly notable for their clarity, lustre and sharply expressed surface growth, and high quality examples are usually encountered at much smaller sizes.

We only know of one other Peñas Blancas crystal that I would consider its equal. The combination of size, clarity, lustre, preservation and overall form makes this a genuinely exceptional specimen, and one of the most significant quartz crystals we've ever offered.
