These unusual fluorite on calcite specimens from the Tres Marias mine were first brought to market by Wulfenite at the Munich Gem and Mineral Show last year, and have scarcely appeared since. We had one further piece sourced on our behalf at Sainte-Marie this year, making this only the third time we've seen this material offered.
The growth is extraordinary. Purple fluorite has formed over calcite, with an earlier generation of rich red fluorite still visible across the reverse of the specimen, creating multiple distinct stages of crystallisation within a single piece.
The purple is anything but flat, with the fluorite having grown across the calcite in tiny overlapping crystals, changing from very soft pink and lilac into areas of vivid purple and creating an almost ombré palette across the surface. There is something in the colour that recalls some of the yttrium fluorites from China, although the texture and growth are distinctly their own.
The combination of colour, repeated growth and fine surface texture gives the specimen an incredible amount of detail, with a wonderful display presence for its size and incredible cabinet presence.
The photographs really do not do this one justice.
