Pink Quartz, Peru
Pink Quartz, Peru
Minerals: Pink Quartz
Locality: Huancayo District, Huancayo Province, Junín Department Peru
Dimensions: 75mm x 58mm x 30mm
Weight: 112.2g
This unusual pink quartz from Huancayo first appeared on the international mineral market around 2020, with some of the earliest examples presented as a novelty at Tucson Virtual in 2021. Even then, the exact mine was not publicly known, and that part of the story remains somewhat unresolved. Further examples appeared through 2021 and 2022, but the material has never become commonplace, and good specimens with defined form remain particularly difficult to find.
The colour is one of the things that makes this material so interesting. It's distinctly different from the more familiar appearance of rose quartz, with a softer pastel colouring running through individual crystals rather than presenting as massive pink quartz. We have had material from this find lab tested ourselves, with manganese and iron detected among the trace elements associated with the colour.
This is an especially impressive example, with phenomenal form, saturation and size. Large, sharply defined crystal groups rise from the matrix with strong three dimensional structure, while the colour is more concentrated and consistent than we often see in material from this find.
At over 100 grams the specimen has a substantial presence, and the combination of scale, definition and colour makes it one of the stronger examples we have handled from this unusual Peruvian occurrence.
