Minerals: Calcite
Locality: Ojuela Mine, Mapimí, Mapimí Municipality, Durango, Mexico
Weight: 32g
Dimensions: 70mm x 47mm x 24mm

The Ojuela Mine is one of Mexico’s great classic mineral localities, famous for an extraordinary range of secondary minerals and for producing forms that are instantly recognisable to collectors. This calcite is from a relatively recent find and is one of the more delicate and unusual expressions to come from the mine.

The crystals form in fine, petal like blades, slightly translucent and arranged in soft overlapping layers across the matrix. In person they catch the light in an almost iridescent way, flashing silver as the specimen is moved, with a depth and optical quality that is extremely difficult to capture in photographs.

The form is also far more three dimensional than the camera suggests. Individual blades rise and curl away from the matrix in different directions, creating a very organic composition. Against the red matrix, the calcite is especially striking.

Material of this type has often been sold under the trade name “Mouse Ear”, a reference to its flower like form, and the name suits it well. It's a very dainty, almost feminine expression of calcite, with exceptional texture, soft translucency and a beautiful contrast of colour.

Several customers who have previously acquired material from this find have written afterwards to say the same thing, that it is significantly more impressive in person than in photographs. This specimen is no exception.
