The historic Lavrion Mining District in Greece is one of Europe’s great classic mineral localities, known for an extraordinary range of species and a long collecting history. Fluorite from the district is far more elusive, which makes well formed examples such as this particularly special and a wonderful opportunity for collectors who enjoy unusual locality material.
This specimen has larger etched cubes distributed across both sides, with the fluorite ranging from almost colourless through soft smoky lilac and pale violet. The larger crystals have lovely transparency, revealing subtle internal zoning and inclusions beneath the surface.
The reddish matrix gives the piece plenty of warmth and contrast, while the etching adds texture across the crystal faces without losing their cubic form. There's a wonderful amount of depth across the specimen, particularly where the larger cubes sit above clusters of smaller crystals and matrix.
It's also genuinely double sided, with well formed fluorite continuing across the reverse and giving the specimen two strong display faces. Greek fluorite is not something we see often, and this is a particularly attractive example with strong crystal size, soft colour and plenty of character
