The historic Lavrion Mining District is one of Europe’s great classic mineral localities, with a mining history stretching back thousands of years and an extraordinary mineral diversity. Fluorite is well documented from the district, although good quality specimens remain surprisingly elusive on the collector market.
This is a fascinating colourless fluorite with an internal concentration of fine sandy material through the centre, giving the crystal a soft pale gold appearance. Around the edges the fluorite becomes incredibly glassy and transparent, creating a beautiful contrast between the clearer outer growth and the warmer interior.
The etching is phenomenal, with heavily detailed surfaces creating stunning texture, while the underside develops into a stepped, tapering formation where the crystal narrows through repeated geometric growth. From some angles it almost appears conical, with the etched structure creating a very sculptural form.
There is an enormous amount to explore, from the internal colour shift to the glassy edges and unusual stepped underside. Greek fluorite is not something we see often, and this is a particularly distinctive example from one of the most historic mining districts in the world.
