Cobalt bearing Calcite with Malachite, DR Congo
Cobalt bearing Calcite with Malachite, DR Congo
Minerals: Cobalt bearing Calcite, Malachite, probable Heterogenite
Locality: Mashamba West Mine, Lualaba, DR Congo
Dimensions: 60mm x 42mm x 36mm approx
Weight: 82.2g
A bright cluster of vivid pink cobalt bearing calcite, richly associated with bright green malachite and dark botryoidal mineralisation, likely heterogenite.
The specimen is composed of numerous intergrown calcite crystals with strong candy pink colour, ranging from translucent along thinner edges to deeply saturated through the larger crystals. Fine crystalline malachite occurs across many of the calcite faces as scattered green inclusions and concentrated patches, creating particularly strong contrast against the pink calcite. Small dark grey to black botryoidal aggregates are distributed throughout the cluster and are consistent with heterogenite, a common cobalt mineral association from Mashamba West.
