Calcite, Vietnam
Calcite, Vietnam
Minerals: Calcite
Locality: Đắk Lắk Province, Vietnam
Dimensions: 60mm x 45mm x 25mm approx
Weight: 45.6g
A beautifully composed cluster of pale, near colourless calcite from the recent Đắk Lắk discoveries, formed as elongated intergrown crystals with a distinctive feather like appearance.
The specimen rises from a dark matrix in a particularly attractive vertical arrangement, with slender calcite crystals overlapping through the centre and several individual crystals extending outward around the margins. The crystals range from translucent to locally transparent, with a soft champagne tint and finely textured growth across their faces. The specimen has been carefully trimmed and given a cut base, allowing it to stand naturally while preserving a very clean profile that complements the delicate, feather like form.
Calcite from Đắk Lắk has appeared in colours ranging from rich orange through pale yellow to almost completely colourless material. Although a relatively recent find, specimens from the locality have attracted considerable international collector interest. Production has also become less certain following the recent closure and change of ownership of the mining operation.
This example is strongly fluorescent under UV light, adding another characteristic to an already particularly well presented specimen.
