Norway is one of the great classic sources for anatase, and Matskorhæ is particularly significant. The locality became famous for sharp blue black bipyramidal anatase crystals, often associated with quartz, and is now protected with collecting strictly forbidden. Mindat records the largest known anatase crystals found on quartz there at around 8 to 9mm, which makes the size of the crystals on this specimen especially noteworthy.
Several crystals here approach one centimetre, with strong form and that characteristic dark metallic colour. They rise from matrix with small amounts of adularia, giving the specimen a striking contrast and allowing the individual anatase crystals to display very clearly.
There's also a wonderful variation in crystal size across the piece, from the larger dominant crystals through to smaller secondary growth, which gives the composition more complexity than its miniature scale suggests.
For Matskorhæ material, the crystal size alone makes this a particularly special example from one of Norway’s most important historic anatase localities.
