The Goboboseb Mountains in Namibia is a world renowned locale for crystals with mobile fluid inclusions, often called enhydros. As the quartz grew from hot, silica rich fluids moving through the rock, it sometimes enclosed tiny pockets of that fluid and sealed them inside the crystal. Millions of years later, some of those pockets remain trapped inside the crystal, with their contents moving when the crystal is tilted.
There are three distinct types of enhydro crystal:
- One phase: a single fluid, either liquid or vapour. These can sometimes be difficult to identify, as they may resemble an air pocket or internal growth feature.
- Two phase: these crytals contain both liquid and a vapour bubble, which can sometimes move.
- Three phase: liquid, vapour and a solid particle, all enclosed together. This is rarely seen in Namibian material, though three phase inclusions are sometimes found in China or Madagascar.
The inclusions are tiny snapshots of the fluids present as the quartz formed. In excellent examples they're large enough to fp;;pw with the naked eye, as a sealed pocket of ancient fluid moves within the quartz.
