Much of the most sought after material was recovered from N'Chwaning I during the major finds of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and with that mine now closed, these pieces have become an increasingly finite part of the collector market. Fine thumbnails from the locality can command thousands of dollars, with even relatively small specimens achieving extraordinary prices when the colour, lustre and crystal form are right.

This is a particularly funky expression of the material, with an unusual composition and a beautiful progression of colour through the specimen. The upper section is dominated by rich blood red rhodochrosite, with lustrous crystal faces and plenty of texture across the surface. The colour gradually deepens into much darker manganese rich material toward the base, creating an almost ombré effect.

The composition itself is wonderfully irregular, with clusters of terminated crystals rising and overlapping, giving the piece plenty of character. The contrast between vivid red crystals and the almost black lower section makes the colour particularly striking in natural light.

At over 20 grams, this is also a very satisfying little specimen in the hand with a true cabinet presence.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1020/1815/4628/files/69AF9899-7DF7-4DCF-A964-4C1D61A64F2D.jpg?v=1791348453
