Stepped growth runs across the faces in intricate layers, while skeletal development and repeated crystal growth create an almost constantly changing surface.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhile some faces are sharp and lustrous, others are heavily textured, with ridges, terraces and growth patterns that catch the light from different angles. Much of the most sought after material was recovered from N'Chwaning I during the major finds of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and with that mine now closed, these pieces have become an increasingly finite part of the collector market. Fine thumbnails from the locality can command thousands of dollars, with even relatively small specimens achieving extraordinary prices when the colour, lustre and crystal form are right.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003eThis is a particularly funky expression of the material, with an unusual composition and a beautiful progression of colour through the specimen. The upper section is dominated by rich blood red rhodochrosite, with lustrous crystal faces and plenty of texture across the surface. The colour gradually deepens into much darker manganese rich material toward the base, creating an almost ombré effect.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe composition itself is wonderfully irregular, with clusters of terminated crystals rising and overlapping, giving the piece plenty of character. We had one further piece sourced on our behalf at Sainte-Marie this year, making this only the third time we've seen this material offered.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe growth is extraordinary. Purple fluorite has formed over calcite, with an earlier generation of rich red fluorite still visible across the reverse of the specimen, creating multiple distinct stages of crystallisation within a single piece.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe purple is anything but flat, with the fluorite having grown across the calcite in tiny overlapping crystals, changing from very soft pink and lilac into areas of vivid purple and creating an almost ombré palette across the surface. Across the back two faces, botryoidal masses of chlorite are embedded within and against the crystal, forming an intricate internal landscape.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe clarity is exceptional, allowing those chlorite inclusions to remain clearly visible throughout the body of the quartz, while the lustre is far stronger in person than the photographs suggest. The calcite develops in overlapping planes and sharply defined geometric forms, creating a complex structure. At the Jean Baptiste Mine, gypsum is more common than smithsonite, making this richly coloured combination particularly appealing.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe smithsonite forms a vibrant orange coating across much of the matrix, with a fine sparkling surface. Across it sit numerous gypsum crystals in a wonderful variety of sizes, from tiny delicate points through to much larger, well developed crystals rising above the surface.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere is a lovely contrast between the softness of the orange smithsonite and the translucent gypsum, while the variation in crystal size gives the specimen plenty of texture and depth. Closer inspection reveals an enormous amount of fine detail across the surface, particularly where the smaller gypsum crystals scatter across the smithsonite beneath.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIt displays beautifully both flat and on its side, with each orientation revealing a different part of the composition. Even then, the exact mine was not publicly known, and that part of the story remains somewhat unresolved. Further examples appeared through 2021 and 2022, but the material has never become commonplace, and good specimens with defined form remain particularly difficult to find.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe colour is one of the things that makes this material so interesting. It's distinctly different from the more familiar appearance of rose quartz, with a softer pastel colouring running through individual crystals rather than presenting as massive pink quartz. We have had material from this find lab tested ourselves, with manganese and iron detected among the trace elements associated with the colour.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis is an especially impressive example, with phenomenal form, saturation and size. This calcite is from a relatively recent find and is one of the more delicate and unusual expressions to come from the mine.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe crystals form in fine, petal like blades, slightly translucent and arranged in soft overlapping layers across the matrix. In person they catch the light in an almost iridescent way, flashing silver as the specimen is moved, with a depth and optical quality that is extremely difficult to capture in photographs.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe form is also far more three dimensional than the camera suggests. Individual blades rise and curl away from the matrix in different directions, creating a very organic composition. Against the red matrix, the calcite is especially striking.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMaterial of this type has often been sold under the trade name “Mouse Ear”, a reference to its flower like form, and the name suits it well. It's a very dainty, almost feminine expression of calcite, with exceptional texture, soft translucency and a beautiful contrast of colour.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSeveral customers who have previously acquired material from this find have written afterwards to say the same thing, that it is significantly more impressive in person than in photographs. That zoning gives the crystals a lovely sense of depth, particularly where the clearer interiors meet the richer purple margins.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThere's also a pleasing degree of transparency through much of the piece, which allows the internal colour variation and overlapping crystal growth to remain visible.
