The specimen is composed of a dense arrangement of pale blue green aquamarine crystals radiating outward in several directions.

The aquamarine is beautifully developed for such a compact specimen, with long prismatic crystals, strong longitudinal striations and numerous well formed hexagonal terminations. Rather than presenting as a simple parallel cluster, the crystals intersect and project at opposing angles, giving the specimen considerable depth and a strong architectural form.

Small black schorl crystals occur throughout the aquamarine, becoming especially concentrated around several of the lower terminations. Their dark colour provides a sharp contrast against the very pale aquamarine and makes the mineral association immediately apparent under close inspection. Small areas of warm iron staining add further detail without overwhelming the delicate colour.

At only 33mm across, this is a rather complex specimen. The radiating habit allows it to be viewed successfully from almost every direction, with entirely different arrangements of aquamarine possible through experimentation.

The The district produced a very distinctive suite of azurite, malachite, fluorite, barite and iron rich mineralisation, often developed through multiple generations of growth. Material of this calibre has become increasingly difficult to replace, especially in specimens where the different mineral phases are all so strongly expressed.

This piece is really all about texture and form. Vivid malachite and deep blue azurite are distributed beautifully through the specimen, with a bright sky blue secondary copper coating developed over sharply structured cubic fluorite - likely to be Chrysocolla, but impossible to confirm without formal analysis. Well defined barite blades rise through the piece, giving the whole composition a wonderfully sculptural quality, while rich orange iron coatings bring another layer of colour through the matrix.

There's a lot of mineral history preserved here. The exact precursor remains debated in the collector literature. Some Sidi Rahal specimens are documented as quartz after fluorite, including pieces where the cubic form and later generations of quartz growth are clearly preserved, while other examples have been sold as chalcedony casts after halite.

The main side is wildly textural. Successive generations of chalcedony have developed across the cubic form in swirling, almost concentric bands, with a pronounced central eye rising above the surrounding growth. That secondary chalcedony growth gives the specimen a character quite unlike the cleaner cubic pseudomorphs from the same area. Even amongst Sidi Rahal material, the few examples I have tracked down vary enormously in form, and this feels like its own very individual manifestation of that same mineralising process.

There is beautiful crystallisation scattered across the main side as well, with soft cream, pink and iron rich colouring catching the light far better in person than the camera manages to show. Africa is one of the classic localities for rhodochrosite, with some of the finest red crystals ever found coming from the historic workings. Much of the most sought after material was recovered from N'Chwaning I during the major finds of the late 1970s and early 1980s, and with that mine now closed, these pieces have become an increasingly finite part of the collector market. Fine thumbnails from the locality can command thousands of dollars, with even relatively small specimens achieving extraordinary prices when the colour, lustre and crystal form are right.

This is a particularly funky expression of the material, with an unusual composition and a beautiful progression of colour through the specimen. The upper section is dominated by rich blood red rhodochrosite, with lustrous crystal faces and plenty of texture across the surface.
